Violence

Okay!

Post me some posts about the pros and cons of violence!  I'm thinking about Armament again... I played my friend Jason's game Theocracy, and it's got some real legs to it, with all the stuff in it elegantly balanced and having effects on the other themes/numbers in the game (or at least, we can see where things are going to be elegantly balanced, we're still in the first playtest phase!)...

I want Armament to be about violence... not prejudging it's effects, but giving you hard choices, and making violence have an impact on you, your choices and the world...

So, if you got 'em, give me good stuff and bad stuff about violence...

The H.P. Lovecraft 3-step Program

Step 1.  Realize your insignificance in the face of an immense, uncaring, fundamentally alien universe.
Step 2.  Due to your insignificance, realize that nothing you do could ever matter.
Step 3.  Return to drinking.

It's better because it only has 3 steps!

NoVa Game Chef thingie and Superpower DRYH?

Okay, a few of us NoVa/Game Parlor rpgers are doing an rpg design/Game Chef kinda thing, which should be fun!  I've stalled out on Dog/Fight and Armament for now, but I'm not running from them or anything... just taking a break while I do some actual playing of rpgs!!!

Also, I've run DRYH now, and I likes it quite a bit.  So of course, now I have to hack it!  I'm working on a superpowers hack, with the focus being on group-created consequences of having powers.  Little more fiddly than DRYH, but hopefully not too much... We'll see.  I'm changing the mechanics a bit, too so I call on all of the powers of the internet to point out my flaws! (In the game design, that is... Ah, what the heck, feel free to point out personal flaws, but I'm not sure Livejournal will allow lists that long!)  Feel free to comment as soon as I post some actual material, hopefully later this week!

Gasp!

(no subject)

Okay, here in no particular order other than stream of consciousness are the rules for Dog/Fight as they came to me in my semi-conscious state.  First is the character sheet, since that's kinda what came to me first... then the rules.  Note, though, that anything underlined is either something that contradicted something else in the rules (remember, half-asleep!) or something I added in thought about later.

Okay, here goes! Hmmm... Well, you have to imagine a line down the middle of the sheet... Maybe there's some way I can embed a word doc?

Dog/Fight

Dog /Fight came to me in a dream... Okay, that's a lie. It came to me while I was desperately trying to sleep... First the initial idea, then the first part of the mechanics... then, as I was almost drifting off, more mechanics, and then more and more... I jotted them all down in a little notebook and finally got to sleep.

Still, now I've got this game idea about playing dogs.  And I think it's a pretty complete idea/game.  So I'm gonna polish it up a bit, put it up here for playtest, and see if it makes any sense at all, or if I'm still dreaming...

Armament

So, I just posted on "there is no screen" and mentioned an idea I've had for a game about violence.  The theme would basically be "If violence is a quick and incredibly easy option for everyone in the world, what will happen to society?", as well as "How far are you willing to go to protect the ones you love/pursue the things you care about"  The setting would be the world as it is now, where *insert magical wave-y wand* something happens and now everyone who's hit puberty has a "gun".  You'd get to choose from some options to customize your weapon, so you could have a big ole blaster, or a version of the "glaive", or a big honking energy sword (although shooty stuff is gonna be the base).  What's important though, is that you'd have stuff you care about, and some mechanic to influence the world/background's state directly or indirectly through your actions.

Okay, this is mostly a place holder while I see if the idea has any merit... I like it, but I'm not sure it'd be fun to play, or make for something more than one-shots...  So, I guess, speak up if you think it sounds cool, or, I suppose, if it sounds like it sucks.

Hole in the Brain

Okay, so I've got a hole being burned in my brain by a couple of ideas right now.  In hopes of alleviating some of the pressure, I figured I'd put them out in the world for everyone to look at and help with, if they feel so inclined.

I do a lot of playing around with design and mechanics for rpgs.  There are two things I’ve got right now; Flags and an rpgish idea.
